DAO/CESAM team participates in pilot station to minimize erosion of soils in burnt areas
Published in 12/10/2017
A DAO / CESAM team, coordinated by researcher Jacob Keizer, is involved in the creation of a pilot station in Castanheira de Pêra to study techniques that minimize soil erosion in areas affected by large fires. The techniques being proposed suggest the soils most affected by fires to be covered by caruma or crushed forest residues, and / or the creation of barriers to prevent erosion. Jacob Keizer considers that these measures are important to avoid soil and nutrients lost on slopes where it is necessary to ensure long-term productivity but also to prevent this material from being transported to the aquatic habitats downstream. This pilot station is a first step of the post-fire emergency measures and the 25 M € financial package launched by the Government to stabilize the soils of the area affected by the great fire of Pedrógão Grande. In addition to the Government and local authorities and organizations, four universities are involved in this project.
