SmartBioR. This is the name of an innovative program in the context of the sustainable use of Marine Biological Resources presented by the University of Aveiro

The University of Aveiro marks the Day of the Sea with the launch of a program for the Enhancement of Endogenous Marine Biological Resources - SmartBioR. The event was held at ECOMARE, Laboratory for Innovation and Sustainability of Marine Biological Resources of the University of Aveiro, and counted, among others, the presence of the Rector of the University of Aveiro Prof. Doctor Manuel António Assunção, Prof. Dr. Amadeu Soares, Director of the Biology Department of the University of Aveiro and responsible for the project, Prof. Dr. Rui Pedrosa, Vice-President of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Dr. Isabel Damasceno, from Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Centro and representatives from Grupos de Ação Costeira / Desenvolvimento Local de Base Comunitária, between Aveiro and Peniche coastal area, and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA-ARH Centro).

Coordinated by the University of Aveiro and developed in partnership with the Leiria Polytechnic Institute, the SmartBioR program aims at the sustainability, preservation and valorization of endogenous marine resources, using scientific knowledge of excellence and technological innovation for its monitoring and integrated management . To this end, we highlight the hiring of highly qualified human resources, holders of scientific knowledge that complement the valences, already consolidated, of the institutions involved. Research and innovation activities are organized according to the two ecosystems corresponding to the territorial action of the members of the consortium: Ria de Aveiro, site of natura 2000 network and special protection area of the EU, by the University of Aveiro and Berlengas, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and coastal areas along the Midwest region of Portugal, by the Leiria Polytechnic Institute.

The University of Aveiro, reinforcing its mission of cooperation with society in the transfer of knowledge and technology, incorporates this idea by proposing, within the framework of SmartBioR, the development of products, processes and services that dynamize the value chains associated with resources endogenous marine ecosystems. Applications range from sustainable aquaculture, pharmaceutical, coastal management and fish stock management, to the protection of marine ecosystems.

Contributing to the Conservation and Enhancement of Marine Biodiversity is a design of the University of Aveiro, which in recent years has created infrastructures and consolidated and reinforced research teams in the area of the Sea.
