Scientific path - short CV

Bruna did her PhD at Wageningen University and Research, the Netherlands on the project Lift up of Lowlands. Lift up of Lowlands was one of six projects of the Bio-Based Geo&Civil Engineering for a Sustainable Society program that aimed at developing biology-based technologies to solve engineering challenges. Bruna focused on the beneficial use of sediments dredged from fresh-waterways to reverse the process of land subsidence. Bruna did laboratory, mesoscale and field scale experiments, which provided her with experience in several laboratory techniques and fieldwork, and there was direct interaction with six end-user companies, two water boards and the Technical University of Delft. In addition, Bruna was responsible for practical classes on soil remediation during 3 years and supervised 1 BSc and 2 MSc thesis. The PhD results are reported in her PhD thesis, three publications in peer-reviewed journals, and participation in five national and four international conferences. While doing the PhD research, Bruna organized the first Environmental Technology for Impact international conference, with more than 250 participants from all around the world.

Since September 2016, Bruna is on the Fire C-BUDs (FCB) project that aims at quantifying carbon budgets and fluxes during two years after a wildfire in a pine forest in Central Portugal. Bruna was actively involved in the installation of the field equipment, soil sampling and laboratory analysis and is now managing the field experiment, integrating the data, writing scientific publications, and supervising MSc students.

Bruna is proponent of the SENSECO Cost-Action - about the use of optical synergies for spatiotemporal sensing of scalable ecophysiological traits - started in 2018. This is following a Cost-Action Short Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at the Max Plank Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, Germany, to learn techniques for modelling ecosystem respiration using proximal sensing and meteorological data.
