Creative solution to minimize the problem of illegal coralline rock extractions using oyster shelves
Published in 15/5/2019
Researchers from CESAM, on the scope of the project SMARTBIOR, study alternatives to the coralline rocks used in aquaria that are often illegally extracted from Indo-Pacific areas, threatening coral reefs. The proposal is to use oyster shelves that are a common subproduct from oyster farming and that have presently a low added value.
Following this study, the team of biologists gave life to a CESAM and University of Aveiro logo using oyster shelves as a substrate that was occupied by living tropical corals.
