Research interests

Peter Roebeling’s socio-environmental-economic research focuses on sustainable regional development through:
- Integrated Catchment and Coastal Zone Management (ICCZM);
- Sustainable Urbanizing Landscape Development (SULD);
- Coastal Erosion and Adaptation Strategies (CEAS); and
- Efficient Air Quality Management (EAQM),
and is based in integrated explorative and predictive approaches that support stakeholders in the identification, development and implementation of sustainable development strategies.

Biography

Dr. Peter Roebeling is Assistant Researcher at the Department of Environment & Planning (DAO-UA) and integrated researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro since 2008. He coordinates,since, 2016, CESAM’s Laboratory of Integrated Planning (LIP) tha taims to develop cutting edge trans-disciplinary approaches as well as societal impact in the area of sustainable and resilient environmental and natural resources planning and management in linked terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine socio-ecological systems (see http://www.cesam.ua.pt/index.p.....


He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Wageningen University (Netherlands; 2003) and an MSc in Agriculture and Natural Environment (Wageningen University, Netherlands; 1995), and has about 20 years experience in the area of sustainable development – leading integrated research projects regarding strategic resource use planning and environmental management as well as pathways for adoption of sustainable practices in Europe, Oceania, South-East Asia and Latin America. Sustainable Urbanizing Landscape Development (SULD) decision support tool

The Sustainable Urbanizing Landscape Development (SULD) decision support tool (Roebeling et al., 2007) is a GIS-based model, based on an analytical urban economic model with environmental and urban amenities (Mills, 1981; O'Sullivan, 2000; Wu and Plantinga, 2003), that allows for the assessment of sustainable landscape development patterns and/or scenarios. Based on scientific and stakeholder input (e.g. scenarios for climate change adaptation, population growth, household characteristics and economic development), the model assesses the economic and quality-of-life benefits of green/blue space development and/or rehabilitation. SULD builds on a numerical application of the above described classic urban economic moldel with environmental amenities, using GAMS 21.3 (Brooke et al., 1998). The model determines the location of residential development, the residential development density, the population density, the housing quantity, the living space and the real estate value, taking into account households’ willingness to pay as well as the opportunity cost of land.

Participation in projects

IB-TWM - 'Iberian Trans-boundary Water Management: experiences from the past and approaches for the future' (PTDC/AAC-AMB/104301/2008), financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER). Project leader.     The objective of the project is to develop and apply an integrated approach that supports decision makers in the exploration of social welfare maximizing water quality targets as well as in the (cost-) effectiveness assessment of instruments that facilitate the achievement of these targets, thereby comparing the situation of intra- and trans-boundary river basins in linked catchment and coastal ecosystems.


Aqua_Add - 'Deploying the added value of water in local and regional development', financed by INTERREG IVC. Through a large international collaboration between the Municipality of Eindhoven (F. v. Swol - project lead), CESAM-DAO-UA (P. Roebeling), various universities, municipalities and natural resource management agencies, this project aims to better deploy the potential of 'water' (economically, socially and environmentally) in urbanised landscapes and to improve the implementation of water measures in local and regional spatial development.


ADAPTARia - 'Climate change modelling on Ria de Aveiro littoral - adaptation strategy for coastal and fluvial flooding' (PTDC/AAC-CLI/100953/2008), financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER). Project member.     The main goal of this project is to perform flood risk assessment and define adaptation strategies for the Ria de Aveiro and the Vagueira-Mira and Esmoriz-Furadouro stretches.


ERLAND - 'Direct and indirect impacts of climate change on soil erosion and land degradation in Mediterranean watersheds' (PTDC/AAC-AMB/100520/2008), financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER). Project member.     The project seeks to estimate the impacts of climate change on soil erosion in representative Portuguese agro-forestry watersheds, in relation to changes in rainfall, runoff generation and vegetation cover.


ForeStake - 'The role of local stakeholders to the success of forest policy in areas affected by fire in Portugal' (PTDC/AGR-CFL/099970/2008), financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER). Project member.     The project aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of various stakeholders to the relevance of adoption of participatory and social learning processes, aiming at sustainable forest management.


LTER-RAVE - 'Long term monitoring in the Ria de Aveiro: towards a deeper understanding of ecological, environmental and economic processes' (LTER/BIA-BEC/0063/2009), financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER). Project member.     The goal of the project is a reappraisal of the ecological and economic value provided by an estuarine ecosystem, through integrated monitoring, analysis and understanding of the multiple habitats.
