Collaboration in International Projects before 2006

2005 – 2008 PUMPSEA – Peri-urban mangroves forests as filters and potential phytoremediators of domestic sewage in East Africa (FP6 - INCO contract no. 510863) Coordinator: José Guerreiro (FCUL, Portugal) Participant Institutions: Stockholm University (Sweden), Southern Denmark University (Denmark), Helmhottz Centre for Environmental Research (Germany), Vtije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium); IMAR – FCUL (Portugal); Institute of Applied Science and Technology (Portugal); University of Florence (Italy); Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (Kenya); University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania); Nationa Environmental Management Concil (Tanzânia); University of Eduardo Mondlane (Moçambique) Nature of research: This project aims to demonstrate the ecosystem service performed by mangroves when filtering discharged wastewater, and thereby limiting coastal sewage pollution, and to examine its ecological and socio-economical effects.

2002 – 2005 TempQsim (EVK1-CT-2002-00112) - Evaluation and improvment of water quality models for application to temporary waters in Southern European catchments. Coordinator: Jochen Froebrian, University Hannover, Germany Participant Institutions: UHANN-Germany, IRSA-Italy, ULEEDS-United Kingdom, EAWAG-Switzerland, IMAR -Marine Environment and Technology Center –Portugal, CSIC-Spain, MSEM-France, TUCR-Greece, NCMR-Greece, UACEG-Bulgaria, Hydrocontrol-Italy, Ludovica Diliberto Water quality dynamics, CEH-United Kingdom, UESSEN-Soiltech Germany, JRC-Ispra- Italy. Nature of research: The general aim of the project is to improve the tools for increasing the efficiency of the integrated water management in the Mediterranean and in semiarid river catchments. To meet this aim, the special dynamics of ephemeral and temporary waters have to be incorporated into the existing instream water quality models. The improved models will be tested in selected catchments in the Mediterranean region.
