Scientific activities

Isabel Capela is Associate Professor at the Department of Environment and Planning of the University of Aveiro. She holds a PhD in Public Health Engineering by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and a BSc (5yr) in Chemical Engineering by the University of Oporto, Portugal.
She has been working in the field of environment for more than 40 years and is presently the Director of the Institute of Environment and Development-IDAD, the interface unit of the University of Aveiro for cooperation with the Society.
Her work deals mainly with issues regarding the use of biological processes for wastewater and solid waste treatment towards the development of green technologies under circular economy.
Her research leads to the publication of more than 50 international peer-reviewed papers, 4 chapters of books and more that 70 papers in proceedings.
In scientific supervision, it accounts with 9 PhD concluded (6 as supervisor and 3 as co-supervisor), more than 40 MSc concluded as supervisor and 4 on-going PhD as supervisor.
She has also experience in research projects coordination (7 national projects) and participation on another 6 projects either as coordinator of UA team or of specific projects. She had also participated as reviewer for research projects application or participation on scientific committees of conferences.
She has been also worked with industries, such as pulp and paper and food industries, regarding their wastewater treatment plants, having at this moment two on-going projects under H2020 for the removal of very toxic compounds to the environment (AOX).

Others

Since 2018, is Director of IDAD - Institute for Environment and Planning, the interface unit (SME) of University of Aveiro for services to society. IDAD give integrated support to companies’ environmental needs, coordinating multisectorial projects involving specialists from air quality, water resources, fauna and flora, landscape, sociology or public health.
