Research interests

Biochemistry and metabolomics of organisms under abiotic stress:

1-Rhizobia
-Levels of tolerance of rhizobial populations under metal, salt and thermal stressors – population genetics, biochemical mechanisms of resistance, metabolomic alterations
-Role of glutathione as a detoxifying and antioxidant agent in the tolerance to Cd in rhizobia – isolation of protein/metal complexes and quantification of the activity of oxidative stress related enzymes

2-Plants
-Biochemical mechanisms behind tolerance to metal toxicity in different environmental conditions
-Phytochelatins as a mechanism to form intracellular metal complexes
-Signalling of phytochelatins
-Phytoremediation of metal contaminated areas

3-Algae
-Biochemical mechanisms (frustulins) of tolerance to metals in freshwater and marine diatoms

4-Marine macroinvertebrates
-Biochemical mechanisms and metabolomic changes behind the tolerance to metal toxicity of benthic marine invertebrates: metallothioneins as a mechanism of intracellular complexation of metals; transfer of metals to higher trophic levels; public health risk assessment of bivalve consumption: quantification of metal accumulation and comparison with the maximum permitted levels (EFSA, USFDA) and determination of the quantities of consumption that do not exceed the tolerated ingestion per week levels (PTWI).
