Microplastics are widely distributed contaminants in aquatic environments, originating from intentional production or fragmentation of larger plastics. Their accumulation and persistence in the environment, the potential to interact with other pollutants and organisms, as well as to change the abiotic characteristics of ecosystems, can lead to environmental consequences. It is estimated that over 80% of plastics pollution are carried by rivers to the oceans. However, limited knowledge is available on the contribution of rivers to microplastics pollution. The objectives of this project are to investigate the adsorption of organic pollutants microplastics in water, including evaluation of the influence of different water constituents and properties on these interactions; to improve sampling and analytical techniques for microplastic monitoring in water and; to provide training to young scientists and share and exchange of scientific knowledge and experience between Serbian and Portuguese teams.
