Project Description
The farming of edible insects has been presented as one of the best innovative sustainable solutions and a planet-friendly diet, challenging the reuse of sub-products such as bio feedstocks, reintroducing these components into the food value chain. This novel concept for generating feed and food is under zero waste policy and circular economy principles when
coupled with sustainable waste management and agricultural practices. Integrating the food safety and the environmental sustainability aspects of edible insect farming, ENTOSAFE is committed to i) provide knowledge on the accumulation and transfer of potential contaminants in insects farmed in rearing facilities; this will directly contribute with data sets to the new legislation and regulatory limits regarding the presence of these compounds in the substrate, and ii) evaluate the effects of organic fertilizer produced in the biodigestion of waste by insects on soil functions, namely water and nutrient retention, nutrient cycling, and plant performance in the amended soil.
