PERSONAL PROFILE IN BRIEF:
Maria Isabel Bastos is a member of CESAM - Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, as a Ph. D. student in the Doctoral Programme on Marine Science, Technology and Management (Do*Mar), at Campus do Mar (University of Aveiro, Portugal), and a research scholarship in Environmental Economics at UNaLab_PT (University of Aveiro, Portugal).
Graduated on Economics (M.Sc. at the University of Aveiro), on Management (MBA at PBS/University of Porto) and on International Business (B.Sc. at the University of Minho), in 2016 she is awarded the title of “Expert in Management & Marketing" (public hearing and examination according to the Portuguese law, DL nr 206/2009, of the 31st August) and in 2014 she is certified as a Skilled Expert of Recognized Experience in the knowledge area of Management, by the UA Scientific Board (DL 115/2013, art 3). Between 2012 and 2015 she was Assistant Professor at ISCA (University of Aveiro) Business Management area, where she lectured Business Finance and Brand Management and supervised 1 MSc thesis and 4 BSc students’ curricular internship.
Since year 1986 she developed a solid and successful career as a senior manager at diverse sectors of activity and various private companies, namely: Utilities and Energy (EDP/Galpenergia/Portgás; 11 years), Retail (Jerónimo Martins Group/Recheio C&C; 1,5 year), Communication and Information Technology (Siemens-Nixdorf; 0,5 year / SOANE; 5 years) and Media (SONAE Group; 5 years), where she led diversified business projects and teams. From January 1996 to October 2006, she assumed a critical role in the successful implementation of the Natural Gas project in the North of Portugal.
Since very early she developed interest on the issue of sustainable development. As a member of Portgás’ management team and Chief Marketing Officer, from 1987 to 2006, she oversaw the building and implementation of several Marketing Plans, Communication Plans, Advertising Campaigns and Market Surveys and actively fought for the shift of Portuguese energetic matrix towards a cleaner one, by reducing the use of fossil fuels by Portuguese families and industries.
As a complementary professional activity, since year 1990 she lectured on Management and on Economics at Portuguese Universities and Colleges (both public and private).
For more than 10 years she acted as the company spokesperson (utilities sector), with frequent public interventions on televisions, radios and newspapers. As keynote speaker, she chaired several sessions at international meetings and gave numerous presentations at plenary sessions on behalf of her company, both in Portugal and abroad. Born in Aveiro (Portugal), in 1962, and currently living in the Aveiro city center, she is a proficient user of Portuguese, English and French (both written and spoken), an independent user of Spanish and a basic user of Italian.
Her research interests focus on world sustainable development, environmental economics, the blue economy and the green economy. Point-source water pollution abatement strategies (mitigation and adaptation). Ecosystem services valuation, environmental-economic analysis (efficiency analysis, cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis), nature-based solutions, and environmental marketing.
CURRENT POSITION:
Currently, she is a Ph.D. Student at the Doctoral Programme of Marine Science, Technology and Management (Do*Mar) (Campus Do*Mar / University of Aveiro). She has also been member of the UNaLab project since 01st March 2020.
