Project Description

The fundamental goal of the project SMARTDECISION is to develop a prototype decision support information system that will characterize urban mobility and help drivers choose the best route for a certain trip, in terms of different factors such as time, traffic congestion, fuel use, and consequently emissions. It is desirable to develop a method to enable cities to estimate emissions produced by vehicles as a function of the route and driver behavior, and to test that identifying high emissions paths and routing drivers around these can lower overall urban emissions; this knowledge will have a large impact on urban mobility strategies, while it can, in the short term, having a reduction of overall urban emissions. This 36-month project will involve integrated measurements of traffic data, origin/destination mobility patterns and air pollution, as well as integrated modeling of traffic, emissions, and pollutant dispersion. It will be focused on vehicles with conventional technologies and hybrids with internal combustion engines.
