ENVIRONMENT & POLLUTION:
• Bioremediation of mine areas (uranium, iron, and others)
• Bioremediation for sustainable aquaculture production
• Terrestrial & aquatic Ecotoxicology
• Environmental Microbiology
• Environmental Biotechnology

MICROBIOLOGY & HEALTH:
• Study of the structure of the microbiome associated with colorectal cancer. Research work approved by the Ethics Committee and Administration Board of Centro Hospitalar do Baixo Vouga, E.P.E., being developed in collaboration with different hospitalar services of this institution.
• Screening of new bioative substances to fight the progression of pancreatic cancer. Study approved by the Ethics Committee and Administration Board of Centro Hospitalar de Entre o Douro e Vouga, E.P.E., being developed in collaboration with this institution.
• Biotechnology: screening for bioactive substances naturally synthesized by microorganisms for different clinical applications (e.g., clinical infections, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer).

Academic degrees

(2009) PhD in Biology by the University of Aveiro, under the topic "Study of the effects of pesticides on non-target organisms".
(2003) MSc in Toxicology by the University of Aveiro under the topic "Toxic effects of acetylsalicylic acid and its metabolites on standard and autochthonous species".
(2001) Graduation in Biology by the University of Aveiro.

Scientific activities

• 2019-present: Assistant Researcher (Norma Transitória) in Biology/Molecular and Cellular Biology/Microbial Diversity and Genetics; topic: "Biogenic polymeric nanoparticles functionalized to bind metals for eco-friendly applications towards bioremediation and biosensing".
• 2016-2019: Invited Scientist under the project "NANOBINDERS – biogenic polymeric NANOparticles functionalized to BIND metals for Eco-friendly applications towards bioRemediation and bioSensing", funded by FCT (project ref. PTDC/AAG-REC/3004/2014).
• 02.2016-06.2016: Post-Doc - "NANOBINDERS – biogenic polymeric NANOparticles functionalized to BIND metals for Eco-friendly applications towards bioRemediation and bioSensing". Funding: FCT (ref. SFRH/BPD/109960/2015).
• 2009-2015: Post-Doc - "PLANT-bacteria interactions in the phytostabilization of Uranium Mine wastes". Funding: FCT (ref. SFRH/BPD/47292/2008).

MEMBERSHIP & STANDARDIZATION ACTIVITIES

• National Expert of IPQ (Instituto Português da Qualidade), acting as an Expert in the Technical Committee TC 190 of ISO (International Standardization Organization), more specifically in the Sub-Committees SC4 (Effects on Soil Fauna and Microorganisms) and SC7 (Soil and Site Assessment)
• Project Leader in the standardization process of the standard ISO/FDIS 18187 - "Soil quality — Contact test for solid samples using the dehydrogenase activity of Arthrobacter globiformis"
• Responsible for the organization of an international interlaboratorial test for validation of the assay described in the standard ISO/FDIS 18187 - "Soil quality — Contact test for solid samples using the dehydrogenase activity of Arthrobacter globiformis".
