The project aimed to meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive and was coordinated by INAG, the Portuguese Water Institute. The project was focused on the development of the scientific assessment of the ecological status/potential of all coastal and transition water bodies of Portugal, including the Ria de Aveiro, based on biological elements (phytoplankton, other aquatic plants - algae and angiosperms, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish) and physicochemical parameters required by the Water Framework Directive, relating them with the existing socio-economic activities. The project also aimed to establish methodologies that relate the ecological status of transitional water bodies with the ecological status of coastal water bodies. CESAM members participated in this project on the phytoplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates components.
