The growing awareness of the impact of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) on climate, and the incompletely recognised but serious effects of anthropogenic aerosols on air quality and human health, have led to diverse studies involving almost exclusively the coarse or the fine PM fractions. However, these environmental effects, the formation processes and the source assignment depend greatly on the particle size distribution. The innovative character of this study consists in obtaining time series with a size-segregated detailed chemical composition of PM for differently polluted Iberian sites, which may be further used for a more accurate assessment of emission sources and atmospheric formation processes. One group of experimental sites will be placed at the Portuguese Atlantic coast, while another group will be located at the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Madrid Metropolitan Area. Novel receptor modelling statistical techniques for identification of local/remote sources, and for quantifying contributions, will be applied.
