Short Bio

Ricardo is a researcher in energy technologies and environmental systems, currently focusing his work on the life-cycle analysis of bio-based materials and biomass management strategies enhancing carbon sequestration, agroforestry and interactions between resources, transformation and supply systems. His research entails cooperation projects with industrial and societal stakeholders, including local governments and NGOs. He traveled and worked in different parts of the world, including one postdoctoral stay up north at the Umeå University in Sweden, and a stay as visiting reseacher and lecturer at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Ceará. Since 2011, Ricardo has been working in research projects in diverse countries such as India, Kenya and Brazil. His most recent work includes sustainability assessments applied to products from the forest sector, including the analysis of pulp and paper, agroforestry systems and the effect of various scenarios of biomass utilization aiming the mitigation of carbon emissions from different sectors.

Currently, he is one of the promoters of the ciclocompost project, an initiative funded through the participatory budget of the municipality of Aveiro to promote community composting and biowaste collection with cargo bikes. Ricardo is one of the co-founders of the HortUA colective that manages a sustainability living lab at university campus, a permaculture project which includes a community garden based on agroforestry principles.

Ricardo enjoys travelling, world music, hiking and activities in nature that allow him to learn more about diverse cultures.
