• Photo exhibition to celebrate biodiversity

    The Exhibition Gallery of the Auditório Mestre Hélder Castanheira (Bookstore), at University of Aveiro, hosts the photographs submitted to the photo contest that happened to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, promoted by the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, at the University of Aveiro. The exhibition, with free entrance, will be open to the public from July 4th to 22nd. The photographs were submitted to the photography contest, aimed at the general public, which ran until May 11, promoted by the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity. The photographs cover the theme of biodiversity, portraying the natural heritage, including terrestrial and marine ecosystems, habitats, species of wild fauna and flora, raising awareness in the community for the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as respect for all species. Photo contest to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity There were 80 photos submitted to the contest, 13 to Category A (12 years old and under) and 67 to Category B (12 years old and under 18, and adults). The jury, made up by CESAM members: Amadeu Soares, Isabel Lopes, Nelson Abrantes, Joaquim Pedro Ferreira, and by a member of the Communication and Image Services of the University of Aveiro: Hélder Bernardo, evaluated in blind-tasting and distinguished the following works: Category A 1st prize: Natural Fragility, Paulo Sérgio Pinto 2nd Prize: Black redstart, Berta Correia 3rd prize: White-browed Albatross returns home through the fog, Francesco Ventura Honorable Mentions Puffin, Filipe Martinho Serendipity, Sofia Morgado Will you give me a ride?, Ana Hilário Category B 1st prize: The light leaf, Miguel Monteiro Pimenta 2nd Prize: Flowers at the sunset, Maria Carolina Carvalho Antunes 3rd prize: Hidden from Nature, Maria Beatriz Nobre Ramos da Fonseca   Honorable mentions Ladybug's protective power, Beatriz de Nogueira Carvalho The forest elf shelf, Tomás Domingues Baptista The award ceremony took place on the International Day for Biological Diversity, May 22, at the Department of Environment and Planning, University of Aveiro.

  • What lives in the mud? A Safari in the Aveiro Lagoon

    More than sixty youngsters, from 3 to 10 years old, and students from the Centro Escolar de Vale de Ílhavo, visited the tidal flats - the intertidal zone - of the Aveiro region. The activity, which took place on June 27th, aimed to raise awareness of the natural treasures of this ecosystem and its vulnerability. In particular, the activity, led by a team from CESAM at the University of Aveiro, aimed to awaken children's interest in natural sciences. Read more here.

  • CESAM at the United Nations Oceans Conference

    From June 27 to July 1, Lisbon will host the United Nations Ocean Conference. The conference aims to encourage the international community to find solutions for sustainable ocean management, bringing together more than 7000 people, including scientists, politicians, organizations, companies and activists. The declining health of the oceans and the pressing need to reverse this process, including combating water acidification, pollution, illegal fishing, and loss of habitats and biodiversity are on the agenda. The Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies is present at the side event One Sustainable Ocean | Ocean Science & Business2Sea. This free event focuses on the future of the ocean, sustainability, circular economy and innovation, and is aligned with United Nations goal 14 for sustainable development: Life below water. One Sustainable Ocean | Ocean Science & Business2Sea can be visited from 8:30am to 6pm at the Pavilhão de Portugal.
