Research interests

Specialization domain: Ecotoxicology - Biomarkers of genotoxicity (DNA strand breaks, Erythrocytic Nuclear Abnormalities), biotransformation (EROD activity, P450 levels) and oxidative stress (Kinetics and substrates) - Mutagenicity (AMES Test)- Environmental contaminants- organics (e.g. PAHs), metals and pharmaceuticals.

Current interests: Nanotoxicology - Omics (genomics, proteomics and metabolomics) - Ecotoxicology - Soil (enchytraeids, collembola) and freshwater (zebrafish) organisms - Environmental contaminants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, nanomaterials - metallics, plastics).

Academic degrees

October 2003: PhD in Biology (University of Aveiro, Portugal). Thesis: Genotoxic Markers Applied to Animal Species of Marine Life. Supervisor: Prof. Dr. António Correia and Co-supervisor: Prof. Dra. Maria Ana Santos (University of Aveiro).

January 1996: Master in Food Sciences and Technology (Technical University of Lisbon / Institute of Chemistry and Biological Technology-ITQB, Portugal). Dissertation: Characterization of the Fermented Microflora in Traditional Portuguese Sausages. Supervisor: Prof. Dra. Teresa Crespo.

July 1993: Degree in Biology (scientific branch), University of Aveiro.

Scientific activities

Research studies involving ecotoxicological effects on soil (enchytraeids, collembolans) and aquatic (zebrafish) organisms exposed to nanoparticles using biochemical (biomarkers of genotoxicity and oxidative stress) and molecular (omics) endpoints.
DNA damage evaluation by comet assay. Omics applying high-throughput techniques for protein and metabolite expression analysis (by HPLC-MS) in collaboration with University of Salzburg.
Standard ecotoxicity tests (ISO/OECD) for organismal effects assessment (mortality, reproduction) after metals, nanoparticles and pesticides exposures.
Co-supervision of practical work of students.
