Food safety and soil quality: from concepts to practical applications

12th October 2011

This      one-afternoon      workshop      aims      to      provide knowledge  on  the  impact  of  soil  contamination  on  feed and  food  quality  and  to  discuss  tools  to  assess  trophic transfer  of  potentially  toxic  elements  and  to  evaluate human exposure

Ecotoxicology of amphibians and reptiles:

4-8 of April 2011

This one-week advanced course aims at providing an updated review and synthesis of the current state  of  ecotoxicology  of  contaminants  and  other  global  stressors  (e.g.  climate  change)  in amphibians  and  reptiles.  It  will  also  give  an  overview  on  different  methodologies  used  to  collect animals in the field, to culture them in the laboratory, and to generate ecotoxicological data. All the information will be complemented with the presentation of national and international case studies.
The course is targeted to scientists, post-graduation students (PhD and MSc) with a background in  Biology,  Natural  and  Environmental  Sciences,  Environmental  Engineering,  or  related  fields, members  of  consulting  companies  and  of  private  and  public  institutions  involved  in  environmental management.

Practical approach to ECOTOXICOGENOMICS

This one-week post-graduate workshop that will be held from the 5th to the 9th September 2011 at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, aims to provide knowledge on the development of molecular markers of stress using molecular biology techniques. This includes among others the following: RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, basic cloning techniques, PCR reaction development and optimisation, real time PCR, DNA sequencing, and development of microarrays (cDNA arrays), their hybridization and analysis. The course is addressed to scientists and PhD and M.Sc. students with a background in Biology, Natural and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental engineering or related fields, members of consulting companies and of private and public institutions responsible for environmental management. All lectures and training sessions will be held in English. A maximum of 20 students will be admitted

Speciation methods for assessing the origin, mobility and toxicity of metals in contaminated matrices

No dia 19 de Outubro de 2011 decorrerá na Universidade de Aveiro (Sala 320 do Departamento Ambiente e Ordenamento), o workshop:

"Speciation methods for assessing the origin, mobility and toxicity of metals in contaminated matrices." - This one afternoon workshop aims to provide knowledge on the analytical developments and recent approaches of speciation methods in solid matrices. The extension to non-traditional analytes, such as mercury, will be discussed. It will also be discussed to what extent these methods have, up to now, satisfied the expectations or have been suitable in particular applications, as well as the usefulness and limitations of speciation methods, thereby assessing their future role in environmental chemical analysis."
