At Conference GoldschmidtTM2009 - "Challenges to Our Volatile Planet", June 21 - 26 in Davos, Switzerland. The Applied Mineralogy Group of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain & Ireland has awarded a prize for the best student presentations in session 15i Geogenic Chemicals in Groundwaters and Soils: Biogeochemistry, Hazard Mapping/risk Assessment, Remediation Technologies.

Research interests

Main research area: Soil Chemistry


The two areas of scientific activity are:

1)Environmental and Analytical Chemistry:
- Testing and validation of analytical procedures for soil and pore water analysis;
- Development of fundamental knowledge on soil chemical processes;
- Development and validation of methodologies for assessment of reactivity and availability of metals and metalllic nanoparticles in soils;
- Speciation of metals in soils and pore water;
- Geochemical characterization of polluted urban soils;
- Soil extraction and analyses of metals and metallic nanoparticles in soil, sediments, water and plants;
- Soil-to-plant transfer of metals and metallic nanoparticles;
- Fate and effects of agriculturally relevant materials.

2)Environmental engineering and environmental policies:
- Nano-enabled fertilizers/ pesticides and controlled release of nutrients in soils;
- Development of models for assessment of reactivity, availability and soil-to-plant transfer of metals and metallic nanoparticles;
- Development of methodologies for the development of soil quality criteria towards plant quality, feed and food safety, animal and human health protection;
- Sustainable management of urban and agricultural soils;
- Development of a contaminated land management and human exposure assessment strategies for Portugal;
- Perspectives for harmonization of soil protection policies in the European Union;
- Recovery of degraded soils;
- Recycling of biomass ash materials to soil;
- Co-valorization of biomass ash and biological sludge.
