Wetland remediation to improve ecosystem and water quality status is a primary objective within the European water framework directive (WFD). Mercury (Hg) is one of the most hazardous contaminants that may be present in aquatic environments, being widely considered to be among the highest priority environmental pollutants. The understanding of the processes underlying the recovery of chronically contaminated estuarine systems as well as predictive approaches on contaminant allocation and environmental impacts, is highly dependent accurate estimates of the rates of transformation between different forms of mercuric pollutants, quantitative information on the partitioning of the different forms and the characterization of the abiotic and biotic processes that might influence mercury bioavailability and mobilization This project aim to contribute to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), by producing a management tool which will allow making decisions towards the improvement of mercury contaminated estuaries ecological status.
