Research Interests

Current interest area: Cito/genotoxicity in human cells. Cellular and molecular biology. Changes in the cell cycle, apoptosis/necrosis, mitochondrial bioenergetics, gene expression, detection of micronuclei and DNA damage, oxidative stress pathways. 

Nanoparticles and emerging stressors. 

General Research Interests: Environmental Toxicology, ecotoxicological evaluation of contaminated waters and soils. Studies of molecular biomarkers as ecotoxicological tool. Species used: Porcellionides pruinosus (isopod).

Scholarship for Scientific Research at Universidade de Aveiro, funded by FCT 


Main activities and responsibilities:
Maintenance of cultures of Porcellionides pruinosus; measuring basal levels of biomarkers and energy reserves; Realization of soil and feeding tests; Parameters calculation (Electron Transpot System (ETS) and Cellular Energy Allocation (CEA)) and statistical analysis of the obtained data. 


09/2009 - 07/2010

Internship in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), at Labtox, Laboratório de Análise Ambiental Ltda 


Main activities and responsibilities: Culture and maintenance of aquatic organisms: Mysidopsis juniae, Artemia sp, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Hyalella azteca and Danio rerio. Realization of acute and chronic ecotoxicity tests with metals in aquatic organisms (Mysidopsis juniae).


09/2010 - 12/2012


MSc degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Universidade de Aveiro, under Helena Oliveira and Maria Conceição Santos orientation. With the teme: Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Osteosarcoma and Lung Cell Lines.
