2003-2004: Final year project in the Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory with Prof. Sónia Mendo supervision in the projects "Detection and characterization of integrons in environmental bacteria" and "Identification of TBT resistance/tolerance genes in marine bacterial isolates".

Research Interests

Lanthipeptides are RiPPs with diverse functions, including  antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antipain. They are produced by many Bacteria and more recently they were also identified in Archaea. My actual research interest is the identification and characterization of novel lanthipeptides in prokaryotes (Bacteria e Archaea). We identify and characterize novel gene clusters in available genomes, including their post-translational modification, regulation and putative immunity systems. We perform:

- Heterologous expression in E. coli with complete gene clusters

- Heterologous co-expression in E. coli of structural genes (His-tagged) and modification enzymes

- Heterologous co-expression in Haloferax volcanii of structural genes (His-tagged) and modification enzymes
