Marine Microbiology & Biotechnology Laboratory (MicroBiotec)
Published in 31/1/2020
The main research areas of the Laboratory are: development of new technologies for rapid diagnosis of disease outbreaks in aquaculture, the implementation of low environmental impact approaches (e.g. phage therapy, photodynamic therapy and quorum-sensing inhibitors) to inactivate microorganisms in marine systems (e.g. in aquaculture systems and in marine areas receiving wastewater), analysis of genetic resources and bioactive compounds produced by marine microbes that can be used in industrial or bioremediation applications and source-tracing of marine products. The Laboratory also make routine analysis of microbiological quality, namely to evaluate the quality of final products (e.g. fish, bivalves and water) but also during the implementation/monitorization of procedures (e.g. depuration of bivalves, HACCP programs).
