  • Research Structure

CESAM research is structured into 4 transversal strategic thematic lines (TL): Ecology & Functional Biodiversity (EFB) Environmental Biology & Health (EBH) Integrated Environmental Systems (IES) Marine Ecosystems & Resources (MER) These interconnected TL are operationalized through 10 interlinked research groups (RG). Adaptation Biology & Ecological Processes (ABEP) Atmospheric Processes & Modelling (APM) Coastal Zone Planning & Management (CZPM) Ecotoxicology (Ec) Environmental Processes & Pollutants (EPP) Functional Biodiversity (FB) Marine Biotechnology & Aquaculture (MBA) Marine & Estuarine Ecology (MEE) Stress Biology (SB) As CESAM RGs involve several disciplines, from natural to social sciences, and fundamental and applied research, within each RG the ever-present subspecialties are consolidated into 29 research laboratories (RL). Adaptation Biology & Global Changes (LABG) Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) Atmospheric Physics (LAP) Behavioural & Population Ecology (LABPE) Biochemistry & Physiology (BcP) Chemical Sensors Conservation of Marine Vertebrates (CMV) Eco-Hydrology Ecotoxicogenomics Emissions, Modelling & Climate Change (GEMAC) Environmental Biomonitoring (BIOMON) Environmental Contaminants Assessment & Remediation (LOCS) Environmental Risk Assessment (RISKA) Functional Responses to Emerging Chemicals (FREC) Fungal & Plant Biology Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture Integrated Planning (LIP) Marine & Estuarine Ecology Marine Geology & Geophysics (LMGG) Marine Lipidomics Marine Microbiology & Biotechnology Marine Primary Production Microbial & Cell Biology Molecular Biotechnology Organic Pollutants & Natural Organic Matter Physical Oceanography (LPO) Resources Management (LRM) Toxicology & Cytometry (TCL) Wildlife Management & Conservation (WMAC)

  • R&D Units

CESAM is structurally organised into a main R&D Unit located at University of Aveiro (UA), and a Decentralised R&D Unit hosting researchers from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCUL). CESAM also integrates researchers from the National Health Institute Dr Ricardo Jorge (INSA) a public organization of the Ministry of Health and the Higher Institute of Engineering of Porto (ISEP) a top school of technology.

  • Management Structure

CESAM’s Scientific Coordinator (ScC) is supported by a team of 4 Vice-coordinators, with a balanced representation of CESAM research areas, which together with the former ScC (now an honorary ScC) the Principal Investigator (PI) of each research group (RG) and thematic line (TL), and the representative of the Post-Docs researchers form the CESAM’s Coordinating Commission. CESAM’s management structure and procedures can be divided into 3 levels of bottom-up management activities: Cross Management of RGs (e.g. ensuring internal and external communication, including through CESAM’s intra- and internet) Integrative TL Management (e.g. flag cross-cutting projects) Strategic Management (e.g. strategic objectives, implementation, management of resources). CESAM also relies on the advice and constructive criticism from the External Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC, established in 2005). Furthermore, to ensure the best practical use of CESAM’s research, fostering multi-actor approaches, a Stakeholder Consultation Committee (SCC) consisting of 10 people representing key local, regional and national bodies has now been established.
