The basin of the Antuã River is a sub-basin of the Vouga River and comprises parts of seven municipalities including Estarreja in the lower part. Several point sources of pollution are responsible for low water quality in this river: industrial and urban discharges, runoffs from agricultural fields and discharges from animal farming. Agriculture is a predominant activity in the margins of Antuã and particularly in the municipality of Estarreja. About half of the Antuã basin is occupied by agricultural fields. In some cases, these fields are irrigated with water obtained directly from the Antuã River.

Previously we assessed the prevalence and diversity of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water from several rivers included in the Vouga Basin. The Antuã River was one of the water streams analysed. For this river worrisome results were obtained: we found a high prevalence of bacteria resistant to antibiotics that are critically important in human medicine. The main aim of this project is to assess the risks to public health posed by the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the water of the Antuã River.
