Programa de investigação / Research program

Strong increases in runoff and erosion should be a main land management concern following wildfires, as they constitute a serious threat to land-use sustainability and downstream aquatic habitats and human infrastructures (e.g. drinking-water reservoirs). In addition to fire itself, post-fire land management practices have a marked impact on the erosion response of recently burnt areas. Logging activities can greatly increase erosion but this has been poorly quantified for recently burnt areas, in spite: (i) logging is typically the most common practice after fire; (ii) recently burnt soils are more erodible than long-unburnt soils. This lack of knowledge extends to other, less frequent forestry operations, like terracing. This proposal addresses these research gaps and, thereby, will contribute significantly to the EU-funded RECARE (2014-18), which, in the Portuguese study case, envisages the –much needed- overall assessment of wildfire as one of several landscape disturbance and soil degradation agents.
