Research interests

Seabird and shorebird ecology: foraging and breeding ecology; migration; bird populations as indicators of environmental changes; habitat use and management.

Principal areas of scientific activity

My research on seabird ecology has been mainly focused on the relationships between seabird foraging ecology and the marine environment, using both temperate and tropical species. A combination of traditional (e.g. stomach content analysis, ringing) and modern (e.g. stable isotope analysis, global location sensors) techniques have been used to perform a more detailed exploration of the relationship between oceanography and seabird ecology during both the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Study areas included the Portuguese Mediterranean coast and the archipelago of the Seychelles, in the western Indian Ocean.

I'm also interested on shorebird ecology, and particularly (1) in developing methods to quantitatively assess the quality of foraging and roosting resources in both temperate and tropical estuaries, (2) to characterize migratory connectivity of waders within the East Atlantic Flyway (encompassing extensive fieldwork in Europe - Tagus estuary and Ria Formosa, Portugal; Wash estuary, UK - and in Africa - Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and Morocco), (3) to describe the structure and functioning of food webs leading to shorebirds and (4) assess the role of these migrant birds on the dynamics of coastal ecossystems.

Keywords: shorebirds, seabirds, foraging ecology, migration, habitat quality, conservation
