Following initial research activities after my Environmental Engineering MSc at UAVR, I decided to seek opportunities to do a PhD abroad to enrich my academic and personal formation. I found an outstanding opportunity, for being at one of the top European universities, WUR, and for being focused on identifying and testing solutions for an environmental engineering problem of greatest relevance for low-lying countries, i.e., land subsidence.
Returning to Portugal at the end of my PhD, I joined the FIRE-C-BUDs (FCB) project, to become responsible for the coordination of the field team, operation of the field site (including flux tower and soil respiration (SR) network), and analysis of the eddy-covariance (EC) data. Not only has the flux site been producing high-quality data since 2017, but also I learnt to process and analyse post-fire EC data.
After the official end of FCB (but continuing the main tasks), I applied the expertise and skills acquired during my PhD to assess the potential of the LIFE REFOREST geotubes and its mycotechnosoil to foster post-fire soil restoration. To this end, I designed and coordinated a combined lab and field study in a 2019-burnt eucalypt plantation. The study compared the effects of the mycotechnosoil on SR and key soil properties with those of 3 other treatments, i.e., eucalypt logging residue, a commercial soil amendment, and sediments dredged from a lagoon.
In 2020 I got a FCT-project funded as PI, ModelEco, with the objetive of developing a global model to simulate post-fire Gross Primary Production and evapotranspiration based on RS-VI.
