Book chapter: Amorim, M.J.B., Kuperman, R., Römbke, J. (2009) Enchytraeid reproduction tests. In: Ecotoxicological characterisation of wastes: Results and experiences of an international ring test. Moser, H., Becker, R. Römbke, J. . (eds) Springer Publ. . (1). 400pp The ecotoxicological characterization of waste is part of their assessment as hazardous or non-hazardous according to the European Waste List. Despite its transfer into national law in the waste list ordinance 2001 no methodological recommendations have been provided to cover the hazard criterion (H14 "ecotoxicity") which was taken over from the legislation on dangerous substances. Based on the recommendations of CEN guideline 14735 (2005), an international ring test was organised by BAM, FH Giessen-Friedberg and ECT GmbH. The background, organisation, methods, results and recommendations are compiled in this book. An overview on the experiences made as well as a comparison of the ring test results with literature data published so far/ In total, 67 laboratories from 15 countries participated in the ring test. The legal background and its organisation is given. The tests were performed with three representative waste types: an ash from an incineration plant mainly contaminated with heavy metals, a soil containing high concentrations of organic contaminants (PAHs) and a preserved wood waste contaminated with copper and other heavy metals. Sample preparation (e.g. inter alia dried, sieved and homogenised including the preparation of eluates) and sample distribution as well as their chemical characterization are given along with information on the statistical evaluation of the data and results of reference tests performed with all test systems. Area of scientific activity

Principal: Ecotoxicology: Several years were devoted to the development of an active research programme in ecotoxicology, mostly terrestrial, in field and laboratory, addressing a series of both fundamental and pre-normative research questions. In the area of soil ecotoxicology research activities include the development of the avoidance behaviour test, genomic tools and use of multi-species tests; refinement of existing protocols and development of new bioassays to assess soil contamination. Additionally, has developed and implemented in E. albidus a behavioural test - avoidance test - having shown its high ecological relevance.

DOMAIN OF SPECIALIZATION

Present research interests: Ecotoxicogenomics: Extensive progresses have taken place since 2006, such as the development and the enrichment of a new microarray, developed for the first time for an Enchytraeid (E. albidus)[1], and is now an Agilent custom platform. At present E. crypticus was subject of a massive parallel sequencing (454-pyrosequencing) and a high gradient Nimblegen microarray is being validated. [1] http://bioinformatics.ua.pt/enchybase/

Nanotoxicology: Collaborating with both national and international experts in the area. Developments in soil nanotoxicology, which are far less studied than in water media, present particular challenges. Investigation is progressing (3 publications 2011) and rapidly moving.

Other skills/activities: Standardisation of new guidelines, and joining ring tests that precede it, such as the Bioacumulation in Oligochaetes, Collembolan Reproduction test (addition of a new test species) or the Evaluation of a biotest battery for the ecotoxicological characterisation of waste and waste eluates. Promoted and optimized the development of novel avoidance behaviour tests for Enchytraeids, having initially produced 3 papers that kicked research in this topic with other species.
