abstract A new genus Sireuma is described to accommodate a new species, S. nobile, from a cave in Portugal. The unique features of the male gonopods and the absence of a postvulvar organ support the creation of a new genus. The new species is illustrated with scanning electron micrographs and diagrammatic drawings. Differences vis-a-vis its relatives are discussed, and information on the environment in which the new species was found is also provided.

funding text This study was supported by the SYNTHESYS Project (DK-TAF-3352), financed by European Community Research Infrastructure Action under the FP7 Capacities Program, and by Fauna Iberica X (Ref. CGL2010-22267C07- 01), which allowed A.S.P.S.R. to visit the Natural History Museum of Denmark. We are grateful to Marian Ramos for providing the support from Fauna Iberica, to Camara Municipal do Alandroal for logistic and accommodation support. We thank to the Speleology Group of University of Aveiro (NEUA) and to F.Tata Regala for kind collaboration in field work. We are immensely grateful to Jean-Paul Mauries for comments and suggestions about the new genus and to Nesrine Akkari and David Koon-Bong Cheung for all kinds of help during A.S.P.S.R.'s stay in Copenhagen.
