abstract A new genus of Coletiniinae silverfish (Nicoletiidae) similar to Coletinia Wygodzinsky and Lepidospora Escherich is described to accommodate the new species Squamatinia algharbica gen. n. sp. n. Many individuals were collected over all seasons of the year in four caves of the Algarve karst massif in the south of Portugal. An identification key for the known genera of Coletiniinae is provided, as well as some biogeographical and ecological comments.

funding text We express our gratitude to F. Tata Regala, A. Perez Delgado and R. Cerqueira for their constant support in the fieldwork. This contribution would not have been possible without the caving support of the Portuguese groups Associacao Geonauta, Centro de Estudos Espeleologicos e Arqueologicos do Algarve (CEEAA) and Aveiro University Caving Club (NEUA). We thank also Prof. Costa Almeida for support in selecting some caves. We are also indebted to Prof. Antonio Calado (Aveiro University) for his help during the preparation of the SEM specimens, and to Marta Ferro for the support on the SEM photographs. The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) financed Ana Sofia Reboleira by means of a Ph.D. grant (SFRH/BD/45744/2008). All the specimens were collected under the permit of the Instituto de Conservacao da Natureza e Biodiversidade.
