Area of scientific activity

Marine Biology and Ecology. Patterns and processes in benthic coastal systems, intertidal and sublittoral soft sediments and intertidal rock. Ecotoxicology of marine and estuarine sediments. Bioassessment in coastal systems. Characterization and mapping coastal benthic biotopes (estuaries and coastal shelf) using acoustic methods. Identification, characterization and classification of habitats and living resources in coastal and estuarine areas.

Present research interests
Study of the species composition, structure and succession of invertebrate communities in coastal environments, including estuaries, intertidal soft sediment beaches and rocky shores and sublittoral soft sediments. Study of spatial and temporal patterns of change associated with sediment contamination. Study of natural and anthropogenic factors upon the succession of macro-invertebrate benthic communities. Integration of environmental descriptors, biological descriptors and eco-toxicological descriptors in the bioassessment of estuarine and coastal areas. Methodologies for the study and the establishment of ecological standards and objectives in coastal systems. Application of acoustic methods for the remote characterization and mapping of benthic biotopes in coastal systems.
