Academic Excellence Award 2009 - Pedro Pinto; M. Caetano, M. Painho and F. Alves "Urban growth on coastal erosion vulnerable stretches" was awarded the 2nd prize at the UNIGIS Academic Excellence Prize 2009 (paper published JCR SI56 2009)

Short Bio

Fátima Lopes Alves has a PhD in Sciences Applied to the Environment (University of Aveiro;Portugal). She is professor in the Department of Environment and Planning in the University of Aveiro and researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM). With more than 23 years of professional experience, her main fields of expertise are Integrated Coastal and Marine Planning and Management, Spatial Planning of Protected Areas, Strategic Planning, AIA/ SEA. She is participating/has participated in national (FCT; EEA Grants) and international research projects on ICZM, MSP and Environment and Socioeconomic Assessment. Some of these projects are TPEA: Transboundary Planning in the European Atlantic (DG MARE), AQUACROSS: Knowledge, Assessment, and Management for Aquatic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services across EU policies (H2020), LAGOONS: Integrated water resources and coastal zone management in European lagoons in the context of climate change (FP7), and SPRES: Oil Spill Prevention and Response (INTERREG IV). Fatima Lopes Alves has long experience in working has a consultant for public and private organizations. She has also vast experience in the coordination of multidisciplinary teams has member of the coordination team of the Portuguese Maritime Spatial Planning and Coastal Zone Management Plans in the Portuguese mainland and of Azores islands. She is editor of 7 books, co-author of 15 books chapters and author of 28 papers in ISI journals in the area of Coastal and Maritime Management and Planning. Supervisor of 27 MSc students, 10 PhD students and 1 post-doc researcher. International evaluator of the BONNUS Programme for Baltic Sea in 2014 (thematic area: maritime spatial planning). Expert to the international enterprises: B&S Europe (Brussels) and GIZ (German) in the scope of Marine Protected Area in the Atlantic space and, in the scope of maritime Spatial Planning and ICZM for the Benguela Current Comission (Angola, Namibe and South Africa).
