NMEC - Estuarine and Coastal Modeling Division

The Estuarine and Coastal Modeling Division of University of Aveiro is composed by professors, researchers and fellow researchers of the Physics Department of the University of Aveiro. This group is integrated in the Research Group on Oceanography and Marine Geology of the research line on Marine Ecosystems and Modelling of the Associate Laboratory CESAM (Centre for Environment and Marine Studies) which is a Associate Laboratory of the University of Aveiro.




Ongoing research is especially dedicated to studies about sea level rising, coastal flooding, development of estuarine plumes, mixing processes and transport, physical/biology/chemistry interactions, with particular emphasis on the climate change effects.

Academic Degrees

2013: PhD in Marine and Environmental Sciences, specialization in Oceanography and Marine Ecosystems. University of Aveiro. Thesis: "Modelling the Minho river plume intrusion into the Rias Baixas".


2008: Master in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography. University of Aveiro. Thesis: "Water temperature variability analysis along the Espinheiro Channel".


2007: Degree in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography. Thesis: "Calibração de um modelo hidrodinâmico para a Ria de Aveiro"; Final internship: "Numerical modeling of the hydrodynamic of the Ria Formosa and New Ancão Inlet relocation".

Participation in Projects

October 2007 to December 2009: Research Fellow in project POCI/AMB/57928/2004 - "Advanced Monitoring and Diagnostics of the Ria de Aveiro Physical Dynamics".


November 2006 to July 2007: Internship in Departamento de Hidráulica e Ambiente no Núcleo de Estuários e Zonas Costeiras (DHANEC) do Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil.
