Scientific activities
Oscar González-Pelayo is PhD in Soil Science (2011), he has a MsC degree in Desertification and Pedagogic spezialization course besides a bachelor in Biology by University of Valencia, Spain. In the last 20 years has been involved in 17 national and international EU projects as a researcher in (i) Desertification Research Center, (ii) University of Valencia (Spain) & (iii) CESAM (Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar-Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal). His research is developed on soil genesis, soil erosion and hydrology in forest and agriculture lands, on post-wildfire on/off-site effects and its mitigation, and on desertification processes.
His PhD was developed between the Desertification Research Centre (Spain) and ESAC (Portugal) on the fire effects on soil properties. His post-doc in Univ. Aveiro and Univ. Valencia was focused on desertification issues and soil threats as (i) agricultural soil loss and its mitigation, and (ii) soil erosion from forest fire recurrence and severity, its mitigation, and the study of prescribed fire impacts on soil properties and functions, which gives him a deep understanding on the importance of the consequences of fire regime at ecological and social level.
His works has resulted in 46 publications, 28 of which were in international peer-reviewed journals across different disciplines (Environmental Science, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Agricultural and Biological Science, Social Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Engineering) that were cited 703 times. He shared research with 144 co-authors and resulted in a Scopus H-index of 16. He has authored/co-authored 3 book chapters, 23 papers in conference proceedings and over 100 communications in international conferences. He supervised 2 PhD students and 2 MsC thesis, and Co-supervised 6 MsC thesis and 4 BsC dissertations. He also has been PhD jury member at Wageningen Univ. (The Netherlands). He is/was member of organizing and scientific committees of 3 international conferences. He has received two scientific awards and is also reviewer for 10 Q1 international journals.
